SEMINARS TO HELP REGION’S LAW FIRMS DEAL WITH CHALLENGING ECONOMIC TIMES

Two Leeds-based firms - chartered accountants and business advisors Kirk Newsholme and insurance brokers MFL Professional - have joined forces to provide breakfast seminars this month which will offer essential advice for the region’s law firms, helping them to deal with the challenges of the current economic environment.

Aimed at a range of legal practices from small, general practice firms through to larger firms with specialist teams, the two seminars will consist of brief presentations given by Jill Wright, a partner with Kirk Newsholme and Mark Philmore, a director with MFL Professional.

Backed by their substantial expertise of working with law firms, Jill will look at tax and audit issues, including how to manage clients’ money efficiently, working capital management and the use of budgets and cash flow forecasts. Mark will focus on professional indemnity insurance (PII), which will include a discussion about the impact of The Law Society’s minimum policy terms and what the PII renewal season may have in store for 2009.

Jill Wright said: “Through my work with a number of law firms I know that many are facing unprecedented economic conditions. Regardless of size, minimising tax and managing working capital are of vital importance for business survival. Through my presentation, I hope to provide law firms with the necessary information and advice to help them get through these tough times.”

Mark Philmore added: “Without question the PII market will be difficult this year and whilst some commentators are pointing the finger at an increase in claim activity as being the sole reason, I believe the root causes go much deeper. During the seminar I will highlight some of the ways in which legal practices can prepare for the changes to PII, as well as taking a look at the current issues in relation to the PII market generally.”

Whilst the first of the two breakfast seminars (16 June) is now full, a second date has been added for 30 June 2009, which will also be held at Kirk Newsholme’s offices in Leeds from 08.30-10.00am.
